The boot lock secures the trunk or tailgate of the vehicle. Unlike the double-safety bonnet latch, the boot lock is typically a single-stage rotary latch. In modern vehicles, it is often electromechanical, utilizing a solenoid to pop the trunk open via a key fob or dashboard button. Misalignment of the striker plate (the metal loop the latch grabs) can cause the trunk to rattle or result in a “Door Open” warning light on the dashboard. In hatchbacks, this part is integrated into the rear wiper/handle assembly.
