The exhaust gasket is a specialized seal placed between the engine block and the exhaust manifold, or between different sections of the exhaust piping. Made from multi-layered steel, graphite, or copper, it is designed to withstand extreme temperatures and pressure pulses. Its primary job is to prevent dangerous exhaust gases from leaking into the engine bay or cabin. A blown gasket results in a loud ticking noise that speeds up with the engine, often described as a “tractor” sound, and can cause a loss of engine power.
